XLplus Add-On: Rename Worksheets
You can use Rename Worksheets to conveniently rename a bunch of worksheets.
First select a workbook which sheets you want to rename. Next select all the sheets you wish to rename. Use [Ctrl] in order to select non-contigeous, use [Shift] to select contigeous list entries.
Now select a list which shall supply the names for all the worksheets.
This list comes from the user defined lists you can specify with Tools - Options - User Defined Lists. This covers by default lists like all days of a week or all month of a year.
Choose options in case you wish to edit the available lists. This allows to import new lists or to enter the values for a new list. Once this is done, the new list is available to be assigned to the sheets selected.
Within Options, you can also specify what shall happen in case the list of names of a user defined list exceeds the amount of selected worksheets.
- Skip rest of list - this will ignore all remaining values of the list - names will only be applied to the amount of sheets selected
- Insert Worksheets - this will apply all names of the list to all sheets. Once the number of selected sheets is exceeded, new sheets will be inserted into the workbook. The rest of the list is assigned to them.
In case the amount of selected sheets exceeds available list names, the rest of the sheets do not get named. This, for example, is convenient in case you wish to assign weekdays to the first seven sheets of a workbook but are too lazy to exactly select the first seven sheets. Simply select all sheets and assign the correct list to them. Only the first seven sheets get renamed as wanted.
Note: In case a worksheet already exists having a name you wish to assign now, the macro stops and displays an error message stating the worksheet it could not rename.
Note: The tool will cover the maximum possible amount of sheets to handle (256) and stop in case this amount of sheets is going to be exceeded. The tool will additionally cover any error occuring because of illegal sheetnames.
Options: Edit List
Use Edit List in order to add list entries or to remove them. You can import lists from an active worksheet, too.
Tip: In case you wish to import a list from your spreadsheet containing years (i.e. 2001, 2002, ... , 2010 etc.) you might receive a weired MS Excel error message stating something like "all non text values were not added to the list". To work around this the easiest way, select the range of cells you wish to add and run Add Zeros Wizard. There select Special and enter a hyphen (´). Click OK now - all of your numbers will be converted to text and are available for adding to a list, now.
